Amazon’s browser-based MP3 store is now optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch users. This enables them to easily buy songs through mobile Safari.
How Amazon MP3 Web Store Works
Competing with Apple’s iTunes Store, the Amazon MP3 Web Store, which catalogs 22 million songs, is now available on iOS devices. However, users will have to open a mobile browser to purchase content through Amazon because of Apple’s App Store rules.
Music bought through the Amazon MP3 Web Store is automatically saved to a user’s “Cloud Player” library. From there, it can be played or downloaded on any iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using the official Amazon Cloud Player app. As what Vice President of Amazon Music Steve Boom said:
Since the launch of the Amazon Cloud Player app for iPhone and iPod Touch, a top request from customers has been the ability to buy music from Amazon right from their devices. For the first time ever, iOS users have a way to do that—now they can access Amazon’s huge catalog of music, features like personalized recommendations, deals like albums for $5, songs for $0.69, and they can buy their music once and use it everywhere.
The Amazon MP3 Web Store also includes the following features:
- Built on HTML5 and designed for iPhone and iPod Touch
- Access to everyday deals like $5 albums, $0.69 songs, and free songs from artists on the rise
- Individualized recommendations based on purchase history
- Immediate availability and seamless playback of purchases in Amazon Cloud Player app
- Free storage of all Amazon MP3 purchases in Amazon Cloud Player
The Amazon Cloud Player
Amazon’s cloud player was launched last June 2012 on the iOS App Store. In order for users to listen to their music in Cloud Player, they can start with the music that they’ve bought from Amazon in the past, shop from over 20 million songs from millions of artists, buy any AutoRip CD on Amazon and get the MP3 version for free, visit Amazon Cloud Player on any Mac or PC and import the music collection from iTunes or any folder, or simply play music from an existing iTunes collection.
Meanwhile, the online retailer does not sell songs through the application, and it requires users to launch a mobile browser. That’s because Apple takes a 30 percent cut from all content sold through apps that are available in the iOS App Store.
