The rivalry between Facebook and Google is heating up, following the search engine giant’s acquisition of the Nik Software last Monday. Nik Software is the Germany-based company behind Snapseed, a popular iOS photo app. The acquisition was agreed upon for an undisclosed amount, and the photo manipulation app was the “golden egg” in the acquisition.
More About Snapseed
Snapseed is a photo manipulation app that is similar with Facebook’s Instagram. In fact, because of the app’s inventive multitouch photo editing interface, it was previously awarded by Apple as the iPad App of the Year in 2011.
It works the same as Instagram in many ways. The app features filters for photos, frames, and image effects like tilt shift. However, Snapseed doesn’t sport its own social network. Furthermore, Instragam is available for free download, while Snapseep costs $4.99
Snapseed on Google+
Even if it is not as popular as Instagram, Snapseed has its own following of photo enthusiasts. It is also a great match for Google+, which emphasizes photo sharing. In relation to this, it was also reported that a portion of the employees who worked on the photo manipulation app will work directly on the social network. As posted on The Verge:
The portion of Nik Software that worked on Snapseed, which includes the company’s San Diego outpost, will relocate to Google Headquarters in Mountain View to work directly on Google+, sources say.
However, it is still unclear what kind of integration will users see from Snapseed and Google+. The search engine giant can integrate the application’s filters, frames, and editing features straight on the social media’s iOS app, while a Snapseed for Android is in the works. The photo manipulation app is also available for Mac and Windows.
Facebook vs. Google+: The Battle of Monthly Active Users
Aside from the Snapseed acquisition, Google’s Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra announced that Google+ reached 400 million signups. He also added that 100 million of which are monthly active users.
Today, I’m excited to welcome +Nik Software to the Google family! We want to help our users create photos they absolutely love, and in our experience Nik does this better than anyone…
This week we also hit an important milestone—over 400,000,000 people have upgraded to Google+… And here too, I’m happy to report that we have just crossed 100,000,000 monthly active users on Google+ (plus.google.com and mobile app).
However, Facebook is still on the lead with over 950 million monthly active users.
