According to a new report, Amazon is expected to increase its Kindle Fire tablet lineup by adding five or six new models. As stated by President of U.S. Retail for Staplesm, Demos Parneros, the online retail store is prepping up to introduce as many as six stock-keeping units. The new tablets are expected to be available in different sizes, including a 10-inch model that is expected to compete directly against Apple’s 9.7-inch iPad.
However, there were also speculations that Amazon is less likely to introduce six new Kindle Fire models. Instead, it will be releasing tablets that come in various capacities. It’s also possible that it will release a unit with 3G or 4G LTE connectivity.
Amazon Kindle Fire Through the Ages
As of the moment, Amazon Kindle Fire is only available in one model and one screen size, and it costs $199. It had a strong start, but the demand quickly collapsed after research from ChangeWave revealed that customer satisfaction for the aid tablet decreased to less than half that of Apple’s new iPad.
Since the online retailer launched its 7-inch tablet last year, there were rumors that it has been experimenting on larger 8.9- and 10.1-inch screen sizes for future models. In relation to this, Amazon is expected to release its new Amazon Kindle Fire models later this year.
When the new Kindle Fire models debut, it is expected that the existing model will remain available at a discounted price of $149.
Meet Amazon’s GameCircle
Other than the new Kindle Fire models, Amazon also stepped up its competition against Apple by announcing its new GameCircle social network. Available for Kindle Fire Games, it is very similar with the Cupertino-based company’s Game Center for iOS. It was also reported that the service is compatible with popular games like Temple Run and Doodle Jump.
Furthermore, it includes achievement, leaderboards, and sync functionality for app developers. As Amazon’s Vice President of Apps, Games, and Services Paul Ryder revealed during its launch:
Our goal is to give developers great tools to quickly and easily reach new customers and keep them engaged. That’s why we’re creating easy-to-integrate APIs for features like leaderboards, achievements and sync. We also introduced In-App Purchasing API in April, allowing developers to offer a seamless 1-Click purchasing experience within their apps and games.
As for Apple’s Game Center for iOS, the company will extend the service to Macs, following the release of its upcoming OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
