Mobile tech and news site Gotta Be Mobile posted photos of the rumored physical model of Apples’ iPad Mini. According to the report, the photo shows an iPad Mini engineering sample that gives a first look at the purported tablet’s design, as well as its possible features.
The model in the images looks like a case maker’s mold, which shows the basic shape of the device. It may be used to hone the production process and test accessories of the rumored iPad Mini, although it is unknown whether it will reflect the device’s form factor.
Possible iPad Mini Features
According to the report, the photo’s pixel count suggests that the iPad Mini will measure about 213 mm x 143 mm. The images also suggested that it will be slightly thinner than the original iPad. As stated on Gotta Be Mobile’s report:
What we’ve found, using a pixel count, is that the iPad Mini should be around 213.36 mm tall and about 143.67 mm wide. This is approximately two-thirds of the size of the new third-generation iPad. The new iPad is 185.67 mm wide, 241.3 mm tall and 9.39 mm thick.
Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet has a width of 120 mm, which means that the iPad Mini, if our calculations are close, might be around 23.67 mm wider than the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 tablet measures in at 198.5 mm high, which means that the iPad Mini may be a little taller than Google’s 7-inch tablet.
Other than the size of the rumored iPad Mini, the mock up indicates a smaller 19-pin dock connector that has been speculated by a number of sources. On the either side of it are two speakers, while current iPad models only have one.
In relation to this, there were rumors that Apple is planning to give their third-generation tablet a refresh. In fact, the current iPad speakers are almost rear-facing, and it can be easily covered when a user holds the device. With the speakers now surrounding the dock connector, the iPad Mini may be louder than the current models.
On the other hand, the sample doesn’t include markers for iPad Mini’s display size, although the recent rumors suggest that it will measure 7.85 inches. There were also claims that it will feature an IGZO screen from Sharp with 1024 x 768-pixel resolution.
Apple will allegedly announce the smaller tablet on October, in line with the release of next-generation iPhone and iOS 6, and it will cost around $250-$300.
