Apple announced last Tuesday that its third-generation iPad will debut in Mainland China next week on July 20. It will be available through select authorized dealer and Apple online store. Buyers can also reserve their tablet on Apple retail store on July 19 and pick it up the following day from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
The availability in China came after Apple reached a settlement with Proview Technology for the right to use the “iPad” label. Many believed that it’s the reason why the Cupertino-based company hasn’t launched their tablet in China yet.
The Apple vs Proview Settlement
Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple reached an agreement with Proview Technology with regards to using the “iPad” branding. The settlement involves the iPad maker paying $60 million for the rights of the iPad trademark.
The ruling was issued last July 2 at the Guangdong High People’s Court. However, Proview’s CEO Yang Rongshan doesn’t seem that happy with the settlement, saying that the amount is not “especially large, but it’s OK.”
Proview originally wanted $400 million from Apple. That’s because the tech company has filed for a bankruptcy protection in 2009 and has reportedly owned more than $400 million to a total of eight Chinese banks. Regardless, the settlement fee has officially ended Apple’s court battle against Proview, giving the iPad maker the rights to use the iPad trademark.
Previously, Apple’s new iPad with Wi-Fi already gained approval in China last March and was followed by the 3G version in May.
Pricing and Availability
The new iPad will be available in black and white and will cost $499, $599, and $699 for the 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models respectively. On the other hand, the new iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular units are priced at $629, $729, and $829 for the 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models respectively. Additionally, Apple’s iPad 2 will be on sale for $399.
It is less likely for Apple to release its 4G-enabled iPad in China because the tablet only supports LTE networks in the United States. In fact, it is facing litigations in the U.K. and Australia as of the moment.
Apple’s new iPad was initially launched in ten countries last March 16, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, U.K. and U.S. Also included in the list are Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
