According to a report posted by iLounge last Thursday, Apple’s next-generation iPhone will be 10 millimeters taller, giving it a 125 x 5.8 millimeter dimension. That is to accommodate a 4-inch screen with a new aspect ratio. At 7.4 millimeters thick, it will also be 2 millimeters thinner than the iPhone 4S.
New Aspect Ratio, Gorilla Glass 2, and New Dock Connector
Because of the slight changes to its dimensions, mobile applications should be redesigned to work with the handset. A taller screen with the same width as the iPhone 4S would have more pixels at the top and bottom of the display, giving it a different aspect ratio.
The report also claims that the upcoming Apple handset will be partially made of Gorilla Glass 2. At 0.8 millimeters thick, the glass panel is thinner than the original Gorilla Glass, but it can withstand 121 pounds of pressure.
In addition, the new device will have a smaller, pill-shaped dock connector that will only have 16 pins. According to the report, “it will be used in all upcoming devices, including an update to the iPod touch that’s expected this year, and will almost certainly feature a similarly updated screen and CPU.”
New iPhone Model, New Components
Rumors emerged after a SIM card tray component for Apple’s next-generation iPhone surfaced at a parts reseller website, SW-BOX. Prior to that, there were speculations that the company would give its upcoming device an exterior redesign. Last month, Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets issued a note to investors, suggesting that the handset will have a unibody case:
“In our view, this will be the most significant iPhone upgrade with a four-inch screen and a new, sleek look that we believe will require a unibody case. This new, sleek look will be the most important reason that consumers decide to upgrade.”
Allegations regarding the next-generation iPhone have gained steam in recent weeks. One of the latest rumors was that a Qualcomm MDM9615 LTE 4G chip will power the device. It will also enable the handset to support high-speed wireless connectivity. Moreover, the mobile phone will adopt in-cell touch panel technology, which will either make it thinner by 0.44 millimeters or allow it to fit a larger battery.
Early prototypes of Apple’s next-generation iPhone are said to be in production. Last month, it was reported that the company was reviewing potential components for its upcoming handset. Regardless whether the manufacturer will take flight from the device’s predecessors in terms of design, its release remains much-awaited.
