The Five Sleaziest Wrestling Stories Of All Time

Roger Fenimoore  Tuesday, June 9, 2009

If you’ve seen The Wrestler, you’re probably aware that the world of professional wrestling is a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Well, truth is always stranger than fiction, and the following five real tales of grappling depravity would make Mickey Rourke pass out in his cheerios. It’s a dirty world in the squared circle – read on and enjoy.

Bret Hart’s Pee Mouthwash

Canadian wrestling legend Stu Hart was no softie – he raised eight boys and four girls in his sprawling Calgary home and without exception, every single one of them either got into the wrestling business or married someone who did. Stu’s single-minded love of grappling often made life hard for his kids, who were raised “too poor for real pants,” according to 8th son Bret’s memoir.

Apparently, things at the Hart household were always teetering on the brink of complete anarchy, with Stu letting Terrible Ted the wrestling bear hibernate under the porch in winter and all the kids being stretched by their father in the basement dungeon. But the worst thing in the book is the tales of Bret’s older brothers Smith and Bruce, as a regular ritual, blasting hot gouts of pee into young Bret’s face in the communal showers. It burned!

andrethegiant The Five Sleaziest Wrestling Stories Of All Time

Andre’s Bad News

The legendary Andre the Giant was a man with huge appetites for food, sex, and booze. He would regularly down multiple bottles of wine with dinner and feel no ill effects, but one time the good stuff got the best of him in a match with underrated grappler Bad News Allen. The pair had been working a series of matches around the horn, but Andre had started coming down with a vicious stomach virus while on tour.

A consummate professional, he continued to step into the ring and give it his all, but when it came time for Andre to deliver his trademark running butt splash in the corner, the Giant added a little accidental insult to injury. Yes, Andre’s oversized bowels let loose from the impact of the move and he released a jet of feces all over the ring. Bad News immediately made for the showers, losing the match by disqualification.

lizzyborden The Five Sleaziest Wrestling Stories Of All Time

Messiah’s Thumbs

In the grand legends of truly sleazy wrestling, no company was ever as awful as Rob Black’s XPW. Black had made his fortune producing “adult entertainment” of a particularly rancid stripe, often starring his then-wife Lizzy Borden. With that money, he ran an indy promotion in the Los Angeles area that often featured adult entertainers as valets.

Well, Borden ended up getting close with XPW star Messiah, and before you know it two unidentified guys broke into Messiah’s apartment, beat him severely, smashed a fishtank over his head and cut off his thumb. Oddly enough, they didn’t steal anything, making most people in the know come to the conclusion that they were hired muscle sent by Black to pay the wrestler back for his adultery. Uh, dude, you can’t get mad when you marry a porn star and she bones other people.

golddust The Five Sleaziest Wrestling Stories Of All Time

Goldust’s New Rack

If you say anything about second-generation wrestler Dustin Rhodes, you should say that he’s loyal. When he signed with WWE and was given the gimmick of the ambiguously gay face-painted Goldust, most wrestlers would have balked – especially if they were the son of “The American Dream,” Dusty Rhodes. But Dustin went balls-out with the character, making Goldust one of the most memorable and effective heels of the Attitude Era.

This one goes into the seemingly endless pile of “McMahon bad ideas,” but it’s such an amazing one that we felt it deserved merit. To jazz up the Goldust character, Vince brought up the idea of Dustin going under the knife and receiving silicone breast implants to further blur the gender line. Dustin offered no protest, but it took the strong objections of a team of doctors before the WWE backed off on the idea.

brody The Five Sleaziest Wrestling Stories Of All Time

Bruiser Brody Stabbing

Bruiser Brody was one of the wildest men in wrestling history, but the way he met his end was over the line, even for him. After a lifetime of wild matches all over the world, Brody travelled to Puerto Rico, home of some of the most intensely involved wrestling fans on Earth. Before a show in Bayamon, Brody was approached in the locker room by fellow wrestler Jose Huertas Gonzalez, who worked under a mask as Invader I.

Under the pretense of conducting private business, Gonzalez lured Brody into the showers, where he pulled out a concealed knife and stabbed him multiple times in the chest. Brody was rushed to the hospital but died during surgery, and through some miracle Gonzalez escaped any jail time for his cowardly assault. To add insult to injury, they had to break both of Brody’s legs to fit him into a cheap Puerto Rican casket.

dude what about the montreal screwjob?

Posted by: i'm really great - June 14th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

the montreal screwjob is nowhere near deserving to be on this list. the fact is that bret was leaving the company and he should have fucking dropped the belt. what SHOULD be on this list is the entire career of new jack. he beat the shit out of that 17 year old kid Mass Transit who was not even a trained wrestler, he stabbed the shit out of a guy in florida when he was on a bunch of coke and got away with it, and he tried to kill the shit out of somebody by intentionally messing up a huge falling stunt.

You didn't even come close to the sleaziest stuff. Benoit stealing Nancy should have been on the list at least for the soap opera-ish air to it all.

I've always been told it was actually Dustin's idea to get the implants as a way to revitalize his character and stay employed a bit longer.

There's a whole lot more to the Brody story, he wasn't rushed to a hospital, he was left bleeding to death in the shower for hours while the other wrestlers sat in the next room unable to get him the medical attention he needed. The worst part is that the assailant is still a top star in puerto rico to this day, even having done a storyline based around him being stabbed to play off of the Brody situation. The breaking the legs to fit into a casket this was BS from what I remember.

Sleaziness forgotten… Johnny Valentine loading Jay York's inhaler with lighter fluid and getting a gun pulled on him for his trouble.

As an aside to the comment about New Jack, all of the incidents were slightly justified with Jack going way too far in each case. Mass Transit lied about being a trained wrestler and his age, then asked Jack to cut him, which he did. The guy in Florida, again wasn't a trained wrestler who basically tried to hurt Jack(watch him try to dump Jack over the top rope without coopoeration). Both tried to play big tough man and get hurt by a bigger tougher man. Jack did go too far but, wouldn't have acted without provacation. The Vic Grimes thing was all an angle(Grimes falling off the scaffold was an accident they played into the story). If a guy tried to kill me for reals, there wouldn't have been a rematch 2 months later. Jack can be a good guy, he wrestled a friend of mine who hurt himself in the match and Jack actually took care of him in the ring like a true pro.

the reason it's not on this list and had a soap opera *aire* to it, is because it was scripted, and aired on television.

No mention of that wrestler who butchered his wife and kids before cowardly taking his own life.

ah well. maybe he'll make the next list

Benoit wont make a sleazylist, he'll make a most fucked up story or most shocking story list.

i've heard stories of jerry lawler in memphis, people walking in on him and ms texas, ironically before here appearance in the wwe. and of course, all the other lawler sexual sleaze

Just great how these guys may not like wrestling but atleast give it great recognition on there show because cheesy or not wrestling is great and should be more publicized because you can't argue how big of a business it is and not just the WWE.. keep this up and more good stories.. Messiah did a shoot interview about what happened in XPW.. tell the story about sunny and how she used to fuck shawn michaels hell and bret hart too and they literally hated each other

Posted by: cengiz - July 4th, 2009 at 1:45 am

yeh bret may have been leaving for wcw but he never said he wouldnt drop he title. he just said he wouldnt lose it to shawn michaels as he refused to do job to bret. as or dropping the title. Bret wanted to vacat the title the next night or lose it the next week to anyone but shawn and who can blame him. mcmahon went through with the screw job becuase he thought bret would take the title to wcw

about Beniot.. he was severely mentally injure3d from all those flying headbutts. i personally believe he thought he was protecting his family from the world instead of just killing them for no reason. you gotta think like a crazy person

Posted by: 619 - September 22nd, 2009 at 2:54 am

People have already forgotten Beniot's son was mentally challenged which can cause quite
a strain on a family, especially where the father was away for around 275 days a year. I'm by no means condoning what he did, it was a horrible situation. If I remember correctly he quietly OD'd his son in his sleep. I believe this may have been out of compassion for the little guy, because he had already killed his wife, and I would bet she was trying to get him to retire because she couldn't handle their son alone. Lastly after the "deed" was done he most likely sat and cried and wondered what the hell he had done for a day or two, and out of depression took his own life. The price of fame can be costly. May they all rest in peace.

…back on subject "XPW" is the winner here, I saw some of those matches…. quite a joke, and Rob Black has always been a scum bag.

One that may be more of a tragedy than sleazy, was the story of all 4 of the Von Erich brothers.
David's death in Japan is still a "mystery", but in Ric Flair's autobiography he claimed it was a drug overdose, and David's best friend "Bruiser Brody" hid the evidence.
Kerry had drug problems also, then lost one of his feet in a motorcycle accident. Shortly after he shot himself in the chest with a .44 on his fathers ranch in Texas.
Mike committed suicide with Placidyl and alcohol, and at the age of 22, wasn't found for 4 days.
Chris depressed over his brothers deaths, especially Mike's suicide, and his 5'5" frame gave him the inability to become the talents that his brothers were, and at the age of 21 shot himself in the head in Dallas. They were all sons of legendary trainer Fritz Von Erich, although I believe Kerry and Chris went by "Adkisson" outside the ring. In any case that is the worst horror a father could live through.
