In case you didn’t notice, it’s already summer and it’s freaking hot outside. Even if you can tolerate the heat, we bet that the stench coming from your armpits isn’t so tolerable. Which is why choosing and wearing the right kind of antiperspirant or deodorant is of major importance, even though a little bit of sweat can be a good thing. Even when summer is gone it’s something you’ll need year round after you sweat from working out or if you just naturally perspire a lot.
But before we get much further, here are some basic info to ensure that you smell great all day.
The Difference Between Antiperspirants and Deodorants
The main difference between the two is that deodorants turn your skin acidic and block the odor caused by bacteria that result from sweating. Antiperspirants, on the other hand, are essentially used to actually block sweating and can be applied to other areas of the body besides the underarms. So, if you sweat excessively you definitely need to go with an antiperspirant.
How Do I Know What to Look For?
The most commonly used ingredient in antiperspirants and deodorants is metallic salts. Typically, a product containing 15 to 17 percent of aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex will do the job. However, if you need something stronger, then look for something that has aluminum chloride hexahydrate as an active ingredient.
Just remember, to avoid skin irritation, start with the “most gentle-to-the-skin formulations (traditional over-the-counter products) and progress to clinical strength over-the-counter antiperspirants, and then try stronger and stronger products (such as prescription formulations) until relief is found.” (Source)
Spray or Gel
Unless you shave your underarms, you should stick with something that is semi-solid, since aerosol products get blocked by hair. Many studies have also shown that semi-solid (gels or the white solids) keep you the most dry since they are applied right onto the skin.
When to Apply
Whether it’s a habit, common sense, or out of necessity, you probably put an antiperspirant or deodorant on first thing in the morning. While this works if you can still dry all day, you may also want to slap something on before you go to bed as well. Why? Simply put, your sweat ducts are slightly larger, so clogging them with antiperspirants works better at night. Regardless of the time of day make sure you apply to completely dry skin.
There’s not much us guys can do to prevent the sweating and the odor that comes along with it. However, if you choose the right product, apply it at night and shower daily, you have a fighting chance. Showering every day with antibacterial soap, especially on your chest and underarms, will keep the bacteria found on your skin at bay. Also, it’s suggested that you switch your brand up about every 6 months to prevent resistance.
