Urban Outfitters has done it yet again. But this time it hasn’t been caught sucking the creative juices out of indie artists.
The brand released, on its online catalog the “Wood Wood Kellog Tee,” a $100 shirt with a star on its breast pocket suspiciously similar to the Jewish Star design. Anti-Defamation League, or the ADL of Philadelphia, and other similar groups had quite a strong reaction. The group claims that the star on the shirt is a strong, painful, and borderline mocking reminder of the atrocities that happened during the Holocaust. The star on the shirt is similar to the star made to mark Jews in Nazi Germany.

The ADL sent out spicy hot words to the brand, claiming that Urban Outfitters has now reached “a new low” and the design was ”…extremely distasteful and offensive.” But the thing is, this isn’t the first time that the brand has been accused of racial stereotyping; as a matter of fact, the ADL contacted Urban Outfitters for designs that, according to the group, promote racism by emphasizing and strengthening stereotypes.
For now, ADL wants to meet with Urban Outfitters, and the clothing company was urged to issue a public apology. The group also wants the shirt to be pulled from the market.
Sorry, Urban Outfitters, but you really could have spared yourself the heat (and some cash); next time, I’m guessing, you’ll do a little more research into your designs before mass producing them.
