You’ve seen tons of them, but which ones are your favorites? Movie fight scenes have to have a few characteristics to make them good: ass-kicking action, excitement that won’t allow you to stop watching, and something original.
It’s true that we love to watch two people kicking either around, but we’ve seen it a hundred times. A great fight scene in the movies is one that everyone talks about well after the movie’s release. Watching all 5 of these videos all the way through is 40 minutes of solid entertainment.
1. “Evil Dead 2″ (1987) – Ash vs. His Own Hand
This movie in and of itself is horror and comedy mixed. The fight scene between Ash and his own hand is no different. During the majority of the scene, the hand definitely has the upper – well, you know. However, it looks like he’s kicking his own ass.
Eventually, Ash wins by catching is hand off guard and stabbing it. It looks just as ridiculous as it sounds, but you can’t stop watching it. I also love the originality because it’s not two people fighting, but a person and his hand!
2. “Bloodsport” (1988) – Frank Dux vs. Chong Li
This match up is one of the most emotional and evenly matched fights in movie history. If you’ve ever seen “Bloodsport”, you will know that this is kind of like our real life UFC (Ultimate Fighting Campionship) use to be – virtually no rules.
Chong Li (Bolo Yeung) is a viscous contender that looks forward to being as brutal as possible. In fact, the reason that it’s so emotional is because Chong Li nearly killed Fank Dux’s (Jean-Claude Van Damme) friend who was also in the competition. Well, you should already know who wins. It’s a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie!
3. “The Princess Bride” (1987) – Sword Fight
The sword fight between Inigo Montoya and the stranger in black is one of the funniest fight scenes I’ve ever seen. The sword fighting itself is well choreographed and I find the moves to be fascinating. But, what’s really great is the dialogue.
Yes, there’s a dialogue in the middle of their sword fight. Inigo at one point tells the stranger that he’s a much better sword fighter than he. The man in black then asks him why he’s smiling and Inigo replies, “because I’m not left-handed” (as they’re fighting with their left hands). The stranger wins the fight, but just knocks Inigo out. It turns out he’s not left-handed either!
4. “Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace” (1999) – Obi-wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jin vs. Darth Maul
This is a very “sit on the edge of your seat” fight scene. Of course since it’s Star Wars, you know there are light sabers involved, but Darth Maul has a double-sided light saber..
We almost lost Obi-wan twice during the scene, and unfortunately, Qui-Gon Jim is defeated and killed by Darth Maul. Eventually, Obi-wan Kenobi becomes victorious.
5. “The Matrix” (1999) – Neo vs. Agent Smith
If you’ve seen “The Matrix” as most of us have (many times), you’ll understand that because Neo (Keanu Reeves) has learned that the world as we know it doesn’t really exist, he is training his mind to realize that he can defy the laws of physics as we know it as well.
This makes the fight scene at the end of the movie really interesting because of the flips, walking on walls, and other stunts he and Agent Smith can do. In the end, Neo almost dies, but he pulls it off and becomes the winner.
