We all enjoy a little action, right?

“A little”, hell. Action is what a lot of us live for. If a movie doesn’t have some faces getting smashed in or limbs getting crunched, it can get boring pretty quickly. There are a lot of movies with some fighting in it, but what about fighting scenes with some movie in it?

You know the ones I’m talking about. The main theme of the movie is fighting, with a little plot thrown behind it. Some are really cheesy and some are freaking awesome. Here are just some of the best fighting movies ever made.

12. Conan the Barbarian (1982)

Conan the Barbarian starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a fantasy type of action film and it’s in the countdown for a couple of reasons. First, it’s an nontraditional type of fight movie and second because it’s just a great, brutal classic.

A lot of times, reviewers try to over analyze this film, but that’s ridiculous. How can you over analyze Conan? It’s one of those movies that not only doesn’t require a lot of thinking, but if you do a lot of thinking, it spoils the movie.

11. Fists of Fury (Tang shan da xiong) (1973)

Fists of Fury (as it’s called in the U.S.) may be a little cheesy, but it’s a Chinese martial arts movie from the 1970s. That’s part of what makes it great. The movie itself was very well made for the time period and it has some awesome fight scenes in it!

10. Kickboxer (1989)

As with a lot of Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, he not only is the hero, but he must defeat a villain that hurt someone else he loves or cares about that was treated unfairly. While this may be annoying to critics, to us, it’s VAN DAMME, which means a loose plot and a lot of fighting. This is what we want.

9. Mortal Kombat (1995)

For anyone that had first played the video game that prompted the movie, you’ll know that whatever plot there is, it doesn’t really matter. The name of the movie really gives away the basic premise for the movie. It’s about fighter competing in a match to the death.

There’s a little more to it than that in that they bring a lot of fantasy into it as well, but the fighting is the exciting part. As you can tell, all they can do is fight. They can’t even spell “Combat” right.

8. Enter the Dragon (1973)

This not only is the first Kung Fu film to be made by a major Hollywood studio, but this is also the last movie that Bruce Lee ever appeared in. In fact, he died just six days before the movie was released into theaters.

Basically, the plot revolves around a martial arts tournament. This movie brought Asian martial arts and Hollywood together in a stunning combination.

7. Rocky (1976)

The original Rocky starring Sylvester Stallone, is now considered a classic and set the precedent for all the other Rocky movies to follow. I don’t think that this was the best film, but it sure caught the hearts of Americans, in particular men. In fact, you could say that this is a great movie about an underdog.

It also appeals to a great fantasy among younger men, as many would have loved to have been Rocky Balboa and envy Stallone for his role. I personally thought the movie was a moving success story, but at this point, Stallone really lacked acting ability and speech enunciation.

6. Karate Kid (1984)

Out of all four of the Karate Kid movies made, this one was the best. I think the ideas in the other two with Ralph Machio were too far-fetched and The Next Karate Kid was too girly.

There of course were some far fetched points in this movie too, but they can be forgiven considering this is another great movie about an underdog who comes out on top in the end. Oh, and I love Pat Morita’s character, Mr. Miyagi; don’t you?

5. Best of the Best (1989)

Again, this is another martial arts film, so the plot is loose, but the fighting is great. Basically, this is a story about an international taekwondo tournament in which some of the members of Team USA and Team Korea have a heated past to say the least.

4. Braveheart (1995)

Really, this is a historical drama and would probably be better classified as a war movie. However, because war is a type of “fighting” and because there is a lot of hand-to-hand combat in the movie, it’s in the countdown.

This is a great addition to the countdown because it’s an unconventional fighting movie. If you want a movie filled with action and passion, this would be the one to watch!

3. Rocky IV (1985)

Finally, Sylvester Stallone got some acting lessons and a speech therapist! Rocky IV was the best of all of the Rocky movies, though a bit unrealistic. The guy he’s fighting is this huge Russian guy, who – I’m sorry -could kick Ricky’s ass any day of the week!

That’s the first unrealistic part. The fight took place in Russia, so the main audience was, you guessed it, Russians. By the end of the fight, the crowd is cheering for Rocky. Yeah, right. However, the emotion, the idea, and the fight scenes were great.

2. Drunken Master (Jui kuen ) (1978)

This Jackie Chan film is a great action/ comedy about a guy whose father couldn’t discipline him enough to teach him kung fu and he was ashamed by his son’s behavior. So, he sent his son to a cruel kung fu master (the drunken master). It’s different and a little corny, but a funny movie and the fight scenes are great.

1. Bloodsport (1988)

Here’s Jean-Claude Van Damme at his finest. The plot of this movie revolves around this huge international ultimate fighting tournament in which Van Damme’s character (Frank Dux) has been invited. One of the evil opponents almost killed Frank Dux’s friend unnecessarily and threatens to do the same to Dux.

The fighting scenes throughout this movie are phenomenal and you get to see a lot of different martial arts/ fighting styles. For this reason Bloodsport may be one, if not the best fighting movie of all time.
