Fairy Tales Aren’t For Disney and Kids Anymore

Fairy tales have been with mankind centuries before the written page was perfected.

Originally, fairy tales were passed down from generation to generation orally. That mean’s the older generation told, or reenacted, the fairy tale to the kiddies. Not what you were thinking, perv.

Eventually, the tales made their way to paper. As the years went on, and tales found their way spreading across the known world, their storytellers took the liberty of modifying them to suit the time and place.

However, it wasn’t until the Brothers Grimm publised a collection of folk and fairy tales in the early 1800′s, that they became big buisness.

It’s hard to disassociate fairy tales with the Brothers Grimm, but if anyone could, it would be Walt “Cryonics” Disney.

In 1937, Disney made history with the first full length cel-animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was also one of the most successful films of 1938, and probably pissed off a lot of little people by mainstreaming the term dwarf.

Ever since Disney’s take on Snow White, they’ve made a boatload on animating classic folk and fairy tales, like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, etc.

Disney pretty much had a monopoly on the fairy tale business throughout the 20th century, but, thankfully, some disturbed men have adapted fairy tales for adults.

One of the first people to shake up the fairy tale industry was Todd McFarlane, the guy who created Spawn and has created the most kickass action figures for over the last decade.

In 2005, McFarlane released an action figure line entitled “Twisted Fairytales”.

Not to be outdone in the fairy tale meets horror field, artist Jeffrey Thomas upped the ante with his “Twisted Princess” portraits in 2009.

Then there’s the other end of the spectrum, which is, hey, let’s make these fairy tale heroines hot.

The main artist mastering this kind of conversion is J. Scott Campbell, which has for some reason, rubbed certain people the wrong way.

Yeah. Even though it’s animation, we have no shame in admitting that those pics are hot. Then again, it’s probably because we don’t get all that much.
