Star Wars: Wishing You Happy Holidays Since 1977

STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL 550x391 Star Wars: Wishing You Happy Holidays Since 1977

On November 17, 1978, Star Wars suffered it’s first major setback. The dreaded Star Wars Holiday Special.

While the special never really won over fans, even George Lucas despises it, it began a long tradition of merging Star Wars and the holidays. Today, you can go into any department store and find Star Wars wrapping paper, decorations, etc. Yes, while it may be to further line the pockets of George Lucas, for many of us, it’s just for fun. Somehow, Lucas, and fans, have perfectly blended his masterpiece with the most wonderful time of the year.

So, here’s our favorite images and videos to make the season bright, and help us forget that Chewbacca is going to be on Glee for their upcoming holiday special. Thanks George.

A year before the Holiday Special, 1977 to be exact, LucasFilm has created holiday greeting cards for its employees and business partners. Most of them are so cool that it makes us wonder why Lucas never mass-produced them for the public, like he does with everything else.

However, artist Patrick McQuade has created some cards of his own, which you can purchase.

Boba Fett Cartoon from 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special

While there are a lot of people who wish that this special was never made, even some involved deny it’s existence, it did have an awesome Boba Fett cartoon, which was also the first time many fans witnessed the infamous bounty hunter.

In 2002, Hasboro began a series of holiday-inspired Star Wars figures, influenced by conceptual artist Ralph McQuarrie, who also designed the holiday cards.

Lego Star Wars Christmas

Since 2008, Blobstudios has released Lego Star Wars Christmas. The fourth installment should arrive between December 20 – 24.

Holly Jolly Empire

So, is Christmas Town really on Hoth? Or, is Burl Ives just out of his mind?

Annual Charity Screening of Holiday Special

Probably the second greatest thing to come out of the Holiday Special was the recent charity screenings in Minnesota. Not only is it for a great cause, Toys for Tots, but its also produced some awesome posters. Some are for sale, others are sold out, like the beyond-cool “Treebacca” print.

The Sith Who Stole Christmas

This mash-up of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Star Wars was uploaded this year. And, it’s already a classic in our opinion.

Ewok Gingerbread Village

While not all Star Wars fans enjoy the Ewoks from Return of the Jedi, even they have to admit that this gingerbread village, and the Ewoks, is incredibly done. Props to the bakery, the Infinite Yums, for a job well done.

Gingerbread AT-AT

If Ewoks aren’t your thing, then perhaps an AT-AT is. This is another spectacular gingerbread interpretation, this time from Blackmarket Bakery in Irvine, CA.
