Mercedes-Benz introduced its 2012 SLS AMG Electric Drive, which is a production version, during the Paris Motor Show. The luminous blue car is considered by auto news website TopGear as a “masterpiece,” which is powered by a 6.2-litre V8 engine.
Meet the 2012 SLS AMG ED by Mercedes-Benz
The new model is considered as the car manufacturer’s attempt to slow down the demise of its Brazilian sea turtle. It features a fully electric car that used four synchronous motors, driving each wheels. There are also two separate gearboxes that work on each axle. The vehicle also comes with some AMG torque wizardry, which attributes to the power of the unit where it is most needed.
Compared to its Neolithic counterpart, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ED is a bit more powerful. The car boasts 740 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, giving it a 0-62 mph top speed within 3.9 seconds.
And because it is electric, the car is obviously emission-free. Additionally, the vehicle comes with a specially designed wall box charging unit. This gives the customer’s home the capability of a public charging station, which produces the same three-hour quick charge. Without the wall box, the electronic vehicle charges in about 20 hours.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the car’s electrified gull-wing is the most powerful vehicle in the AMG product line.
Calm and Quiet Supercar
Despite its features, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ED executes its power in silence. That’s why it raises question whether a vehicle needs to be powerful and noisy in order to be labeled as supercar. Apparently, the easy answer is no. If a car can do everything faster, what more are you looking for?
It was reported that the car costs $573,000 and is equipped with Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). The addition of KERS to vehicle was made possible with the help of Mercedes-AMG Formula One team.
Although the car’s engine runs calmly, there are still times that it sounds like a hidden jet flying overhead. So, whether Mercedes-Benz’s latest SLS AMG ED can be labeled as a supercar remains to be seen.
To know how cool and quiet the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ED is, you can check out the automaker’s recently released YouTube video. In the clip, the car was seen taking lap at the Ascari race circuit in Spain.s
